I have been trying to get some decent lightning shots for a couple years now mostly. I am extremely jealous of all the cool weather my buddies in AZ get to shoot so I am always looking to do some storm chasing of my own… Unfortunately, there were clouds 3 days out of the year in Lemoore, and Pensacola has tons of lightning, but it is mostly cloud to cloud or the clouds are too close to the ground to actually get a shot. Last week, Iku and I were sitting on the couch watching TV and the windows were constantly lighting up. I checked the radar and saw that there was a storm a few miles away so I ventured out to an old spot and set up and waited… and waited and waited. Well, I was a little premature and the storm was moving slower than I thought. After a convo with a local fisherman and some texting with my buddy Mike for some tips, I took some shots, but nothing worthwhile. The clouds were moving quickly, so I decided that I could at least grab a long exposure shot or 2 for my troubles. By the time the storm front got to where I was, it had mostly died out so I headed home. Upon importing my memory card a few days later, I noticed that I captured a couple strikes during my long exposure! Accidental lightning is still lightning I guess… I need to refine my chasing technique a bit more and I look forward to some better shots in the future…(Click to view larger in the light box)
