Golden Dragons Jet

Canon XSi, Tamron 17-50 2.8VC, 17mm, f/16, ISO 100, 9 exposures

This is one of the many static displays on base in Lemoore, however, it is the only F/A-18 display and is continually repainted with different squadron colors. The name displayed on the jet is of the squadron’s Commanding Officer. The “World Famous Golden Dragon” CO’s wife is good friends with my wife and I thought it would be a nice going away gift to get a HDR shot of “his” jet on display. I had been waiting for some cloud cover and/or a nice sunset to snap my brackets and I really liked the look on this particular night. I parked, walked over, set up, composed, and fired off my brackets. When I turned around, there were 2 MAs (military police officers) who had snuck up on me! Apparently, that particular week, there was security training going on and my photography was “reported” as suspicious activity. Now, for the record, I was on base with my flight suit with my hospital ID badge in plain sight so I thought I wouldn’t be bothered at all… I showed them my ID and explained that I was taking a picture for the CO and was the ‘unofficial photographer’ for the hospital on base. They actually apologized, saying they just had to check into what I was doing, saluted me, and said good night. Not a bad run in with the ‘tripod police’ :) Now I actually haven’t sent this to him yet, but I will soon! Hopefully he will enjoy a nice print of this for his office!
