Halo!

I was hard at work this afternoon in the yard, but took a break from picking up the rest of my tools for a dinner break.  When I came back outside, I noticed this HUGE halo around the moon (Jupiter is really close to the moon too right now…) and had to ask my mom, who is visiting this week, to come out and verify that it was really a halo, or if my post-LASIK eyes were playing tricks on me :)  From Wikipedia: “It forms as light is refracted in millions of randomly oriented hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere”

I took a couple shots from the back yard, then ventured out to the forest behind my neighborhood.  I’m kind of a wimp, so I didn’t venture very far in for fear of snakes, alligators, murders (I had just watched the premiere of The Following so I was a little spooked…) but was able to get some fun shots with the trees as a foreground element.

Can’t say that I have seen this before, but was definitely an interesting phenomenon to capture!

  3. I was wandering the same thing about the halo. I went about midnight to see the moon and wasn’t sure about the halo as well. Digging that 1st shot.
